Substance Abuse
Expressive arts is well suited for addictions. While it is not a substitute for clinical addictions treatment when required, it can assist in providing a valuable connection to oneself. Intermodal art allows for expression, containment, and safety. Visual arts, collaging, writing, movement, and music provides a language of its own that can bring awareness, motivation, and inspire change. Establishing safety that is specific to each individual is the first step, with first stage trauma care at the core of every session.

As an expressive arts facilitator, my role is to guide the process. Each person’s process is unique to their own experience. I have an extensive background in working with addiction and recovery issues in which I draw from as a facilitator, with the awareness that the process will unfold as the individual needs.

Some issues that are relevant to addictions are:
Unmanageability and powerlessness, denial, and shame.
